The 3rd Annual September SLAM! Extreme Kayak / Paddle Board Fishing Tournament is taking place at the Pompano Beach Pier, Florida on September 15th, 2012. The tournament is an offshore fishing competition for kayakers and paddle boarders with about 100 competitors expected to participate this year. And if the last two tournaments are any indication there will be some huge fish caught. The entry fee for competitors is only $85 and there are some fantastic prizes to be won. There are over $10,000 worth of prizes in the raffle taking place at the Captains Meeting in Brus Room on September 14th, 2012 where there are two Kayaks up for grabs from Hobie and Dicks Sporting Goods. Also in the raffle are Costa Del Mar Sunglasses, Guy Harvey signed posters and much much more. First place is taking home $2000 in cash and 2nd 3rd winning Hobie Kayaks from Nautical Ventures, 4th Place wins an Ascend Kayak from Bass Pro Shops and for biggest pelagic fish a BOTE SUP Fishing paddle board. The list of eligible fish includes: Dolphin, Wahoo, Kingfish, Black and Yellow Fin Tuna, African Pompano, Cobia, Snapper, Amber-Jack, Yellow-Jack, Almaco Jack and Mackerel. Past winners of this tournament include a 38lb king caught by Joel Malcouski in the first SLAM!. The winning fish in the second tournament was a 43lb Amber Jack & 8lb Dolphin caught by Doug Perez. Total weight for Doug was 51lbs. The tournaments proceeds go to the Palm Beach Reef Rescue Organization and part of the goal is to raise awareness about the fragility of the Palm Beach reef ecosystem and its need of protection.
