Aloha, the start of our pelagic season is just begining. Now that spring is here, and the weather is getting nicer, the boys in Hawaii have had some good times on the water. Recently I had one of my most memorable kayak fishing experiances ever. Even though I didnt catch the biggest fishof th day, and I caught only one fish the smallest mahi, it was still a day I will never forget. Fishing with friends the fun never ends.

Early and in the dark one morning, Micah Pignolet, Daniel Valenzuela and I, paddled out into perfect morning water. The winds and swell were really down. The water was slick glass. As I raced for the outside Dano proved that being first is not always best. He was the last one out and the first one hooked up. The sun was not even up yet as he battled away. Just as the sun came up, dan boated the big mahi and I snapped a photo right when the sun came over the mountain.

We continued to paddle and do more trolling with our dead mackeral and double hook set ups. Micah was heading toward us when suddenly his pole took off. as we got closer we could see he was into a good battle. Whatever was on the end of his line was taking long powerful runs down. Micah finaly got it up and it turned out to be a 17 pound yellow fin tuna.

It was still early in the morning and I had not hooked up yet. I was looking for my first fish but it was not to be. Micah, not more than 20 minutes after his ahi, got railed again this time by a big mahi. We could see it thrashing and jumping. The fish gave a great battle. Micah was able to slow the fish down. As micah got control of his mahi he left it in the water for a while to tire. Daniel and I circled his fish in attempt to catch some of the mahi following micah's fish. I drug a bait right in front of micahs bow and we watched as mahi leaped onto my bait. Bamm I was on. Within minutes dano was hooked up too. All three of us were on. This was the funnest day kayak fishing ever. Between three of us kayak anglers we landed 4 mahi, 1 ahi, 1 trevally, and 1 barracuda.

On another occasion last month, and in the same fishing area, Dano took a massive hit on the yak and ened up doing battle and landing a 36.5 ono. We are all so excited about the upcommiong year. The fishing looks to be really good. Next month I will give you more precise information on the gear we use to catch these big fish.

Feb. 1st 2008 was the start of the Aqua Hunters annual makahiki acculmative kayak fishing tournament. This is one of the funnest contest the state has to offer. From feb 1st - sept. 30th Hawaiian kayak anglers wiil test there skills against eachother in this 8 month event. Onlyy 40 days of fishing may be claimed during this period and only two fish can be scored a day. Points are given for different species, different weight catagories, as well as club records. The big score every one wants is the tri fecta. This is a combination of three different pelagics. This is the only yime you can score three fish in one day. So far I am lucky enough to be leading the tournament in points but Isaac Burmaghim, Aqua Hunter owner is right behind me.
