Angler of the Month - Tony Gonzales E-mail
Thursday, 22 October 2009 06:26

Tony comes to us from the Lone Star State. As a child his father and uncle started him fishing but he got away from it while playing paintball, semi-professionally. The travel involved in paintball became too expensive so he came back to fishing. Initally he started wading home waters with limited success. So he turned to the Internet and came across www.texaskayakfishing.com He found lots of helpful people and the right information that helped him get started in kayak fishing. Besides the info on TKF all those pictures of all the guys holding up nice fish in kayaks got his attention. Tony had never even sat in one let alone fish from a kayak. So in the summer of 2006 he purchased his first kayak and hasn't looked back.

Tony mostly fishes Texas coastal waters for redfish and trout. He is an avid tournament participant. In the warm months redfish dominate his angling but in the winter he switches to his favorite, big speckled trout.

His preferred tackle is a low profile reel, like the new shimano corado 200 on a 6'6" or 7' medium action rod. He uses a medium light for trout, and a medium heavy for red fish, but a medium action is an all around work horse. Depending on conditions his go to lure is a pearl colored skitterwalk fished walk the dog style. His next choice is a small swim bait like the Texas Tackle Factory Killer Flats minnow. His third option is to throw a sand eel imitation, usually a Brown Lures Company Devil eye.

Tony is a member of www.texaskayakfisherman.com, www.kayakfishingmagazine.net and www.paddlesports.com. He also owns and operates www.fishprotexas.com and posts as either "Hookem" or "Hookem2255."

Kayak - Native Ultimate solo, Navtive Manta Ray 14 and sometimes a Hurricane Phoenix 140.
