Justin Speed checks in this week with a reader report from Baton Rouge. Well done Justin!

"Left Baton Rouge, LA at 4AM and headed Southwest to Calcascieu Lake with a couple kayak fishing buddies of mine. We made it to Hog Island gully just before sun up. We were fully rigged just as the sun came up and decided to try our luck for shrimp with the cast nets. No such luck. So as usual we tie on our favorite plastics and start our paddling. We head east towards Calcascieu Lake. I cast out my chartreuse Matrix shad on a white 1/4 ounce jighead. Less than 10 minutes into the paddle, I thought I'd hung up on some structure...WRONG. First fish of the day was the biggest. 26.5" 5.2 lb Louisiana Speck. I didn't catch any more of this size, but ended with 4 trout (the big one, two 17", and one 13") By 10AM the water had practically stopped moving. We turned around to paddle back to the vehicle. I caught a 16" flounder on the turn around on the same plastic. All fish caught were on the yellow matrix shad. Great day on the water."
