There looked to be a short weather window this morning so I loaded up my kayak and hit it. Destination, Santa Cruz. Target, California Halibut. Dawn Patrol! I was met by a gorgeous sunrise, a mixed swell, but no wind yet. Got to the ground and proceeded to hook up on a procession of small schoolie rockfish. This one is a Black Rockfish. And here's a Copper Rockfish. And a Vermillion Rockfish. An Olive Rockfish. A Brown Rockfish. A Lingcod. Another Black Rockfish. Another Brown Rockfish. The fish were coughing up small 3" squid. Match the hatch? Another Vermillion Rockfish. And another Vermillion Rockfish. I managed to make one piece of bait, and sent that down for a California Halibut. This bait is too big for the rockfish to play with so my procession of rockfish stopped. And no Halibut love either. But hey, it was a short action packed morning. The wind started to come up around 9 and by 10 I was on my way in.
