Aloha KFM is boogie here with a fresh Hawaiian islands updated. The tournament season for us islanders is really heating up.

Hosted the first of three tournaments in this classic big island series. The turn out was good for the Spring Yak Attack held May 31st. and June 1st. on the island of Hawaii however the fishing was a little slow. In fact not one pelagic fish was brought to the scales in this two day tournament which surprised all of the contestants. Team Coastal Kayak Tours and the Aqua Hunter Team really pounded the coast hard as well as did most contestants. The reef fish stole the show this year with a couple big beast coming to the scales. The biggest fish went to a 48.6 pound white trevally, a respectable fish that put the hurt on the rest of the competition by at least twenty pounds. Despite no pelagic fish everyone had a great time at an awesome event. The next Summer Yak Attack for Kona is slated for Aug.23rd and 24th. You can get all the info you need at the above links. Here is the official score card from legendary Steve Heusser.

  1. 48.6 pound white trevally Paul Belmudes
  2. 23.3 pound white trevally Sam Britton
  3. 22.8 pound giant barracuda Patrick Wilson
  4. 17.8 pound grey snapper Mike Carter
  5. 14 pound giant barracuda David Elgas
  6. 11.4 pound giant barracuda Micah Pignolet

The fishing and competition in the Makahiki Annual Kayak fishing tournament is nothing short of amazing. There have been a lot of big fish brought in state wide by Hawaiian Island kayak anglers. A recent catch just shattered the old AH record with the solo landing of a 72 pound giant trevally. I will try to get more info and some pics from that awesome fish for next month on KFM.

There is a tandem team competing in the makahi and they have been making a big splash. They are two brothers who live on Oahu and go by the name of The Uyeda Bros. These guys have been nailing some big fish lately including a 58 pound ono that is the standing AH record as well as a very large giant trevally. One day they even had a double mahi hook up. these guys are out there showing everyone what can be accomplished on a tandem kayak. As of now they rank 3rd in the Makahiki. Well done Uyeda Bros. I finally broke a short slump with my best kayak catch ever a whopping 53 pound ono. This was my first ono of the year and my best catch to date.

What a blast. If you have never kayak fished in hawaii before you got to get out and give it a try.

My Hobie sponsorship is going very well. Hobie along with www.windwardboats.com have agreed to up the level a notch by starting a three tournament series to be held on oahu. These tournaments will run in conjunction with the Yak Attack Series. The push in Hawaii is towards Pro Level Competitions with cash prizes and trophies. Next years tournament schedule for the Hawaiian Islands promises to be pretty awesome and hopefully nationally televised. If there is anyone interested in developing Big Game Professional Kayak Fishing Tournaments in the pacific ocean please contact me.

Next month I will have some more tournament postings as well as some info on the gear we are using. I hope everyone is having a great summer and catching lots of fish. Be safe out there and courteous. Till next month, tight lines and smokin reels. Aloha, Boogie-D
